"The world is changed by the women you push too far."
It's 1956 and the global political climate is uncertain. In the UK, Sara Wesker is writing a letter, reflecting on her life filled with struggle and triumph.
Back in the day, Sara led the “singing strikers of 1928” to fight for better working conditions for female garment workers in the East End. She was a fierce advocate for workers' rights, fighting at the iconic Battle of Cable Street, inspiring a generation of playwrights and embroiling herself in a high-profile love affair. But did her love of the cause cost her the love of her life? And was it worth it?
This 5-star reviewed, OffFest nominated play featuring some of the iconic songs sung on Sara’s picket lines, has sold out in New York, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in theatres across the UK.
On International Women’s Day, join us in celebrating the remarkable, yet largely forgotten, life of this trailblazing woman. Her story deserves to be heard—and now it will be.
About the Play
Chopped Liver & Unions
by J.J. Leppink
Produced by Blue Fire Theatre Co.
The East End of London has long been a hotbed of rebellion. From the Matchgirls of 1888 to the women of Ford’s Dagenham factory in 1968, its working-class women have fought for change. Among them was Sara Wesker, who led a groundbreaking 12-week strike in the garment industry in 1928.
A passionate trade unionist and Communist Party activist, Sara galvanized a previously compliant workforce, singing on picket lines and leading the charge for better working conditions. In 1936, she fought at the historic Battle of Cable Street. This is her story—one of resilience, revolution, and love.
