Ribbon Journal and Japanese style notebook

This journal is sewn on ribbons which attach it to the decorated paper cover and is ideal for notes and drawings. A soft cover notebook with decorative Japanese style stitching is a quick stylish way to bind loose sheets.

In this practical workshop, which is suitable for all abilities, you will be introduced to the materials and techniques involved in basic bookbinding. You will learn about the materials you will be using and their suitability for each binding style. There will also be an introduction to the tools and equipment involved and their correct handling.

All tools and materials will be provided including decorated papers for covering the bindings. 

During the workshop, you will learn to:

  • Select and prepare covering materials. 
  • Fold paper into sections ready for sewing.
  • Use a variety of sewing and binding techniques.

About Rachel Ward-Sale

Rachel is a professional bookbinder, Fellow and former president of Designer Bookbinders. In 1992 she co-founded Bookbinders of Lewes where she undertakes a wide range of binding projects for private customers and institutions.

For many years Rachel has taught bookbinding workshops in her bindery and other venues including West Dean College. She regularly teaches masterclasses for Designer Bookbinders and the Society of Bookbinders.

Her work is represented in collections around the world and her designed bindings have won awards in UK and international competitions.
