South Downs Open
The South Downs, a range of chalk hills spanning across the counties of Hampshire, West Sussex, and East Sussex, is not just a landscape but a living testament to art, literature, history and culture. Join Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery in celebrating what it means to live, work and be inspired by this iconic landscape in the South Downs Open.
The South Downs Open exhibition is a selection of artworks from our Call to Artists. Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery was delighted to receive hundreds of artworks to be considered by the panel of professional artists who selected the exhibition, which will contain over 100 works, including paintings, drawings, artist prints, photography, sculpture, and ceramics. Artworks showing in the South Downs Open are available for purchase and offers the public the chance to acquire high-quality affordable art.
The artworks selected for this exhibition reflect the geographic breadth of the South Downs, from Old Winchester Hill in Hampshire to Beachy Head, Eastbourne in East Sussex, and a variety of materials and artistic styles. However, all the works communicate a strong personal connection to the landscape and express feelings of joy and wonder and an awareness of change and time, from the shifting clouds as they scud across the sky, driven by the strong winds and the changing of seasons to the enduring presence of human habitation or the slow passage of geological time.
Join Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery as we spectacularly conclude our 25th anniversary year with the South Downs Open, continuing our commitment to history, art and literature and a celebration and engagement with our exceptional location within the South Downs.
Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery celebrates the history, landscape, and creative community of artists with the South Downs Open 22 October 2024 - 1 February 2025.
